In a historic move, The Walt Disney Company has appointed Dana Walden as its new Chief Executive Officer, making her the first woman to lead the entertainment giant. Walden, 58, succeeds former CEO Bob Chapek effective immediately.
Walden’s appointment represents a milestone for Disney and the media industry at large, which has long been dominated by men in top leadership roles. Her selection signals a new era of change and progress at the 99-year-old company.
“Dana is an exceptionally proven leader who has continually inspired teams to achieve incredible success,” said Susan Arnold, Chairman of Disney’s Board of Directors. “Her strategic vision, deep understanding of our unparalleled brands and franchises, and track record of innovation and deliver make her the ideal CEO to lead Disney into its next century.”
A respected television executive, Walden previously served as Chairman of Disney General Entertainment Content, overseeing the company’s streaming, TV, and cable programming. Before that, she was Co-Chairman of the Fox Television Group.
Under Walden’s leadership, Disney plans to further prioritize streaming as it competes with Netflix, Amazon, and others in the crowded marketplace. She is expected to continue the company’s investment in creating premium content for its Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ platforms.
“Disney’s storytellers are the absolute best in the world,” Walden said. “I’m honored to lead this amazing team as we build on the company’s iconic history of creative excellence.”
Walden takes over during a pivotal time for Disney following Chapek’s turbulent tenure. Her immediate priorities will include boosting profits, reviving the recently reorganized Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution group, and charting the parks unit’s Covid-19 recovery.
A native of Boston, Walden is married to leisure industry veteran Matt Walden. Together they have two daughters. She becomes one of only a few women CEOs across major media companies.
