Currently, she holds the position of Senior Director and Head of Epidemiology & Modeling at Ginkgo Biosecurity. She assumed this role following Ginkgo’s successful acquisition of the data analytics technology and team from Metabiota, where she had served as Chief Executive Officer. Nita’s impactful work has been instrumental in providing governments and businesses with the critical insights and tools needed to effectively prepare for and respond to infectious disease threats, safeguarding public health and fostering global resilience. Nita’s profound fascination with infectious disease epidemiology and its potential to address some of the world’s most pressing health challenges was ignited in the seventh grade when she read about disease detectives in Medical Mysteries: Six Deadly Cases. This early spark of passion set her on an unwavering course toward a career that would allow her to harness the power of technology and data to create meaningful and lasting change in the realm of public health. Nita’s early career was characterized by a diverse range of hands-on experiences, including outbreak investigation at a local health department, field research on tickborne diseases, and in-depth analysis of the factors driving hantavirus disease risk in both rodents and humans. These formative experiences provided her with a solid foundation in the principles and practices of epidemiology and instilled in her a deep appreciation for the complexities and challenges inherent in infectious disease control and prevention.

Upon completing her graduate studies, Nita transitioned to the private sector, where she focused on developing innovative modeling solutions for estimating risk and potential impacts from extreme events. Initially, her work centered on hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, and other natural hazards, but she soon returned to her enduring passion for infectious diseases, combining extreme events modeling techniques with the field of computational epidemiology. This groundbreaking work led to the creation of powerful tools for estimating potential human and economic losses from infectious disease outbreaks, providing decision-makers with the critical information needed to proactively manage and mitigate these risks.

In 2015, Nita joined Metabiota, driven by a compelling vision to enhance global resilience to infectious disease threats. She quickly established and led the company’s infectious disease modeling team, making significant contributions that were recognized through rapid advancement to increasingly senior roles, culminating in her appointment as Chief Executive Officer in 2019. Under Nita’s visionary leadership, Metabiota achieved remarkable success in developing cutting-edge disease monitoring systems and predictive analytics tools. These innovative solutions enabled real-time tracking of disease outbreaks, providing invaluable insights into the current and future risks posed by these events. Metabiota’s work has had a profound impact on public health policy and interventions, playing a key role in containing and mitigating the spread of infectious diseases around the world. Nita’s journey continued in 2022 when she joined Ginkgo Biosecurity following the acquisition of Metabiota’s data analytics technology and team. At Ginkgo, she has remained steadfast in her commitment to measuring, mitigating, and managing infectious disease risk, spearheading key initiatives that leverage artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to enhance disease detection and forecasting. Her work has not only helped to protect public health but has also advanced the field of biosecurity through technological innovation and global collaboration. Nita’s exceptional leadership and dedication have been recognized through prestigious awards, including being named a Top Women Leader of San Francisco in 2024 by Women We Admire and induction as a Full Member into Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society.
