Apple is getting ready to roll out iOS 18.1 at the end of this month with a number of groundbreaking AI updates that will make their debut on the firm’s Apple Intelligence platform. The update will pack object removal in Photos, automatic movie creation, writing improvements, web page summarization, and a reimagined Siri ability. Yet a number of features are being pushed to next year, including Genmoji and Image Playground.
Release Timeline
The Cupertino company showed off its new AI-operated iOS 18 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) back in June 2024. The operating system has been available for iPhones since last month, but even the iPhone 16 series, which was built around AI capabilities — will not have many of these AI-specific things running yet.
According to a new report from Bloomberg, the update will drop on Monday, October 28, in line with how Apple has historically released updates. The load is likely to be a bit heavier for Apple, and 9to5Mac reports it has been allocating additional time to cleaning up the bugs in its system and making sure its cloud servers (shown publicly) are better tooled up for the influx of AI traffic.
Upcoming Features
IOS 18.1 will be out there at first with writing tools in, a brand-new Safari look and a Photos “Clean Up.” That said, things like ChatGPT into Genmoji integration are expected to come later in iOS 18.2.
Into the future, we have iOS 18.4 expected in March to provide a means for Siri to respectfully dip her hand into apps and personal data so she can serve up even better personalized replies. Future updates will also add features including Image Playground and automation for filing emails.
Putting together a system like this is no easy feat, which means Apple will still need to piece everything together over time in order to properly launch the AI on its devices and ensure that the efforts thus far don’t go up in smoke.
