Oslo, Norway – Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous efforts to promote democracy and resist authoritarianism in her country. Machado, a former presidential candidate, has emerged as a leading symbol of civilian bravery and political activism in Latin America.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Machado for uniting Venezuela’s previously divided opposition. Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the committee, said:
“Machado has become a key, unifying figure in Venezuela’s political opposition, finding common ground in the demand for free elections and representative government. Despite serious threats to her life, she has remained in Venezuela, inspiring millions with her courage.”
Machado has faced years of political persecution under President Nicolás Maduro, including arrests, disqualifications from running for office, and constant threats to her safety. In the most recent election, she was barred from running, and Edmundo Gonzalez, a political newcomer, replaced her. The election was marred by repression, arrests, and human rights violations, resulting in over 20 deaths and international criticism.
Since January, Machado has lived in hiding to avoid persecution, yet her steadfast resistance has continued to inspire Venezuelans and the global community alike.
